Manchester City enjoyed a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday and Joao Cancelo was one of many players to impress. The Sky Blues booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and had Cancelo among others to thank for steering them to victory.
The 26-year-old set up Phil Foden with a through ball over the top, but he fluffed his lines. He had so much possession at the Puskas Arena, barely gave away the ball and was diligent defensively when called upon, so it was no surprise fans lauded him on social media.
Jao Cancelo is an unreal baller

Every single player looks so sharp for us… Gundogan and Foden unplayable. Cancelo playing class again. Them 2 goals were WC, KDB is a different breed… what a strike. And then Foden turning like Iniesta in the midfield and laying it into Whippy like that. Too good

Hard to believe Cancelo has been with us since 2019, he is different class this season. Proof that some players just need time to settle. #ManCity pic.twitter.com/3IwzAaA6Vd

There are many top full backs in the world. Trent, Davies, Jordi Alba, even Shaw on current form. But none get close to Cancelo right now. To do what he does and he never seems to be caught out, just world class.

Against Gladbach, Cancelo played for 63 minutes, had 90 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 93% of his 71 passes, created one chance, whipped in one cross, made two interceptions, gave away one foul, made one clearance and had one successful dribble (WhoScored).
The Portuguese international has made 34 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals and supplying five assists (Transfermarkt). Cancelo has been a regular under Pep Guardiola, operating at left-back, right-back and briefly in midfield, so he’s an important player.
