For the second consecutive season, City have embarrassingly crashed out of the Carling Cup at an early stage to lower league opposition. Last year it was Doncaster, and last night we went down 2-1 to Chesterfield at Saltergate despite having taken the lead in the game. Take nothing away from Chesterfield, they played their hearts out and deserved it.
Pearce has already accepted responsibility for last night’s defeat and the overall slump at the Club, but it’s hard to see a way out at the moment. The stark facts are that the combination of tactics, team selection and on-pitch performances are not delivering. It’s not just the managers fault; the responsibility is collective and therefore shared by the players and Board
Despite everything Psycho is still a bit of a cult hero at Eastlands and most Blues would like to see him stay and succeed. However, we forget that he is still a relatively inexperienced manager and City should now grab Alan Curbishly to support Pearce and take some of the pressure off him. Reports of Psycho suffering chest pains is not good news and should be sounding alarm bells.
Curbs is the last manager with a good track record in the Premiership that is currently available, although he’s also the favourite now to take over at Leeds. City need to move quick and bring his invaluable managerial experience to the club before we wind up in a relegation fight we will not be able to escape from. Just look at what O’Neill has done to Villa. They are an unrecognisable team from last season despte being pretty much the same set of players. We need that ‘ O’Neill ‘ effect at City and Curbs is the only option that is available at the moment.
Whether Psycho would accept such an appointment is debatable, although you might suspect he would want to be his own man and in sole control. However, clearly there is a big problem at the club at the moment and somewhere along the line decisive action needs to be taken.
