‘I hope he stays’ – Pep Guardiola addresses Man City player’s uncertain future

|

Bernardo Silva has been outstanding for Manchester City this season but has had an uncertain future since the summer. Pep Guardiola revealed at the start of the campaign that Silva wanted out, but the 27-year-old ended up staying at the Etihad Stadium as no deal materialised.

Days before the January transfer window opened, Guardiola admitted that Silva had the green light to leave City, but no acceptable offer came the club’s way before the window shut. Fabrizio Romano of Sky Sports and the Guardian says City want to tie Silva down for the long-term, but there’s no guarantee he’ll sign.

“I hope he stays at Man City for many years – but Bernardo and the club will decide together,” said Guardiola on the Portuguese international’s future, but it doesn’t appear negotiations are making much progress. Silva’s existing deal runs until 2025, but him signing an extension would ward off any suitors.

The 27-year-old has made 234 appearances in all competitions for City since joining from AS Monaco in 2017, scoring 45 goals with 47 assists. This season, he’s scored 10 goals with three assists from 33 games across the board and has delivered some of his best peformances in a City shirt.

It’s easy to see why Guardiola is so desperate to keep Silva for the long-term, but time will tell if he’s successful.
