From Vital England:

Adam Johnson and Darren Bent are both targeting regular starting places for England – I would say Johnson ‘probably’ has the better chance.

Adam Johnson scored for a second successive England game, and again from the subs bench, making it 2 in 4 games as he helped England to the 3-1 win in Switzerland last night.

The Man City man, as he told sky sports, was disappointed not to start the qualifier – when many felt he would – but pushing for a regular spot is something he is now looking to do: ‘it is disappointing not to start, so you have got to come on and do your best and hopefully push for a place in the starting XI, that is what I try to do.’

It was not just Johnson’s goal that was impressive, his overall contribution after replacing Theo Walcott was very good and leaves him with every chance of gaining a regular starting place – certainly a regular squad place is very much on.

As for the game itself Johnson feels that another win helps ease the pressure that was on England, Fabio Capello and the players as a whole going into the qualifying campaign with confidence now very high: ‘the mood is very good obviously after two great wins. We look forward to meeting up again full of confidence.

‘Coming into qualifying we had a lot of pressure on us. But we have given the fans something to cheer about. Two wins and two great results, top of the group.’
