Vital Man City recently spoke about Kyle Walker’s future at Manchester City, suggesting he won’t be sold amid interest from Fenerbahce as it would leave Pep Guardiola short of options at right-back after Joao Cancelo’s move to Bayern Munich.
Héctor Andreu of Fichajes says City are ‘looking’ to eventually replace the ‘undisputed starter’, however, and there might be some truth to the rumours. Walker will turn 33 in May, has lost his place to Rico Lewis, and has struggled with injuries this season, so he’s definitely in the eve of his career.
The England international is a player Guardiola likes, so the decision to move him on won’t be made lightly. There’s every reason to believe Walker will see out his contract until 2024, but the 32-year-old might not be a regular at right-back by then.
Cancelo’s departure will surely force City to sign a replacement at left-back over the summer if a player can’t be signed on deadline day, but Guardiola will also need a right-back to succeed Walker in the future. Pep has been using the defender as a third centre-back at times, so he’ll need a tried and tested right-back to take the physical burden off Lewis.
