Joao Cancelo looks set to leave Manchester City before the January transfer window shuts and is closing in on a loan move to Bayern Munich, so Pep Guardiola will have a void to fill at left-back.
Mike Keegan and Jack Gaughan of Mail Online say City ‘could return’ for Ben Chilwell as Cancelo’s replacement, having wanted to sign the Chelsea defender back when he was a Leicester City player.
The 26-year-old has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season but hasn’t featured since October due to injury. Chilwell wasn’t even a regular earlier in the campaign due to Marc Cucurella signing from Brighton & Hove Albion, so Chelsea may be open to selling the Englishman.
City won’t panic buy in the transfer market, so Guardiola wouldn’t green-light a deal for Chilwell if he didn’t believe he was good enough. Keegan and Gaughan say an approach was made by the Sky Blues in 2020, so he does appear to be a Pep target.
And Chilwel would surely jump at the chance to join City, especially if the left-back spot is vacant. Nathan Ake is a regular in the makeshift position but could make way if a better fullback is signed.
