Man City have made the right decision on 27 y/o’s future [Opinion]

Manchester City are fielding interest for Nathan Ake but have made it clear that the 27-year-old won’t be sold. Despite nearly leaving to join Chelsea over the summer, Graeme Bailey of 90min said days ago that Pep Guardiola has no intention of letting Ake go.

It’s the right decision from City as the Dutch international has become an important player in defence. Ake has impressed when called upon, replaced the injured Aymeric Laporte without issue and says he’s happy in Manchester, so it makes little sense selling him.

The 27-year-old joined City from Bournemouth in 2020 and has gone on to make 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals. Ake struggled to hold down a starting place in his first two seasons at the Etihad Stadium but has featured in nine of their 14 games this campaign.

His form appears to have attracted interest from Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, but a sale is off the cards. Ake has a contract until 2025, so City aren’t obligated to cash in early.

And despite Pep Guardiola having five centre-backs on the books, the strength in depth has come in handy. Ake and Laporte can operate at left-back while Manuel Akanji and John Stones can play on the right, so the backline is very versatile in case of injury to the fullbacks.
