Manchester City’s wages were published by The Sun over the weekend and a lot of revelations have been made. Jack Grealish’s lofty salary is a worry while he’s struggling for form, Manel Akanji earning more than Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias is surprising given the pair’s service over many years, but Ederson earning only £10k-per-week more than Stefan Ortega is a real shock.

The 29-year-old joined City from Benfica in 2017 and has gone on to make 249 appearances in all competitions, conceding 193 goals with 124 clean sheets. Ederson, a Brazilian international, is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups at City, so his wages should probably reflect that.
He signed a new deal in 2021 worth £65k-per-week/£3.4m-a-year but earns less than all but four players in the first-team, so Ederson is surely due for an improved deal?
The Brazilian is a key player and is first-choice between the sticks under Pep Guardiola, so why is he earning so little compared to his teammates? And why is the 29-year-old Ortega earning close to his wages as a No.2 who’s made zero appearances this season?
