Manchester City’s salaries were recently published by The Sun and revealed new-boy Manuel Akanji was taking home £180k-per-week in wages – making him the sixth-highest earner at the club.
Aymeric Laporte earns £120k-per-week which is 33% less than the 27-year-old who isn’t expected to be a regular in the starting lineup, so he can’t be happy that Akanji landed a more lucrative contract.

Laporte joined City from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 and has gone on to make 155 appearances in all competitions. The Spanish international made 44 appearances across the board last season, playing in 33/38 Premier League games, so he’s a key player at the heart of the defence.
Laporte is just 14 months older than Akanji, hasn’t had a new deal for three years and has provided four-and-a-half years of excellent service for City, so he’s right to ask questions over salary.
When fit, the 28-year-old is likely to start ahead of Akanji but is earning £60k-per-week less, so his agent won’t be happy with the reveal. Laporte was briefly disillusioned due to a lack of playing time in the past, but he’s happy now and has three years remaining on his existing deal.
But when a new player comes in on more money, it often leads agents to request an improved contract for their client.
