Man City may have to pay £67.5m to sign 22 y/o who ‘dreams’ of coming to the Etihad

Manchester City are second in the Premier League for goals (68) and have two players in the top-10 scoring charts this season – Raheem Sterling (10), Riyad Mahrez (10) – but they don’t have a player with a 0.5 goal-to-games ratio.

Pep Guardiola released Sergio Aguero last summer and failed to replace the 33-year-old in the transfer market. City tried to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur but didn’t match his asking price, so they’ve since turned their attention elsewhere.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is one player they’re desperate to sign, but Darwin Nunez has been on their radar since 2020. The 22-year-old has scored 40 goals in 77 games for Benfica since joining from UD Almeria in 2020, so he’s one of the best young strikers in the continent.

Record (h/t Sport Witness) say Nunez ‘dreams’ of joining a club like Man City or Atletico Madrid and would cost €80m (£67.5m) to sign this summer. Whether the Sky Blues pay that figure remains to be seen, however, as Haaland has a release clause which is cheaper than the 22-year-old’s asking price.

Nunez would have lower salary demands than the Norwegian but he doesn’t have a comparable scoring record.
