Man City should consider €40m forward with more assists than De Bruyne – opinion

Manchester City are preparing for the eventual departure of Sergio Aguero, as per the Guardian, but we’re no closer to identifying a replacement. We previously had Timo Werner, Arkadiusz Milik, Patson Daka, Luis Suarez and Erlin Haaland on our radar without success, but Darwin Nunez might be a viable option.

The 21-year-old began his professional career at Penarol (2018 – 2019) where he scored four goals and made one assist in 22 games before joining UD Almeria (2019 – 2020). Nunez scored 16 goals and made three assists in 32 games before SL Benfica (2020 – present) came calling in September 2019.

He’s gone on to make 11 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals (one goal in Primeira Liga) with six assists (four in Primeira Liga). He’s assisted more goals than our top-creator Kevin De Bruyne (three in Premier League), so he’s having a great campaign.

Mundo Deportivo (h/t Football Espana) say Benfica have slapped a €40m (£35.9m) asking price on Nunez’s head, but manager Jorge Jesus believes he will be the club’s most-expensive sale. Nunez looks a talented player who would improve our squad, but he won’t come cheap.

In other news, Manchester City should sign David Alaba – he’s made more interceptions than Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias this season
