Man City player could be dropped for World Cup opener [Opinion]

|

England lock horns with Iran for their World Cup opener on Monday, November 21 and Jack Grealish is at risk of being dropped due to his poor form at club level.

The 27-year-old hasn’t been at his best for Manchester City this season and hasn’t been starting for his country of late, so Gareth Southgate could overlook him when picking his XI to face Team Melli.

Iran to win

Grealish has made 16 appearances in all competitions for City this campaign, scoring just one goal while failing to make an assist. The England international has started only two of City’s last six Premier League games, however, amassing 263 minutes from a possible 540 (48.7%), so Pep Guardiola might be losing faith in him.

Grealish hasn’t been a regular under Southgate this season either. He’s started only two games for England since November 2021, making substitute appearances in five of their 10 games while being left out of the matchday squad once, being suspended once and being an unused sub once.

And with the 27-year-old failing to score for England since March while failing to make an assist since September 2021, Southgate may consider other options in attack. Grealish can’t have any arguments either as his output for club and country hasn’t been good enough.
