Man City player missed Newcastle game due to ‘knock’ picked up v Bournemouth

|

Jack Grealish wasn’t expected to start in Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Newcastle United with Phil Foden being available for selection, but the 26-year-old should have been in the matchday squad at St James’ Park.

He wasn’t included, however, and City’s official website confirmed it was due to him picking up a ‘knock’ from August 13’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth.

Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer overcame their minor injuries to make the squad against Newcastle, but Grealish was instead rested and will hope to be fully fit for City’s next competitive game.

Grealish has made three appearances in all competitions this season, failing to score or make an assist in 192 minutes of football. He’s swapped with Riyad Mahrez due to inconsistent performances and may struggle to wrestle his starting place back from Foden.

After a disappointing debut season that saw Grealish score just three goals with three assists from 26 Premier League games, the England international will have hoped to start this campaign strongly. He hasn’t, however, so Guardiola is having to rotate players until his wide forwards start firing.

Next up for City is a home clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.
