Man City won’t sign £40.5m-rated 24 y/o with 56 goals in 176 games despite report [Opinion]

Manchester City needed to replace Sergio Aguero over the summer and wanted one of Romelu Lukaku, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane or Erling Haaland to fill the void.

The Premier League defending champions failed to sign any of the aforementioned, however, so Pep Guardiola opted to use Ferran Torres and Raheem Sterling in the makeshift role.

City are expected to sign a centre-forward in one of the next two transfer windows, with Erling Haaland their preferred target, but the Telegraph have hinted that Dominic Calvert-Lewin might be an option.

The 24-year-old scored 16 goals in 33 Premier League games at Everton last season and was named in England’s Euro 2020 squad over the summer.

Calvert-Lewis has hit double figures for league goals in the previous two campaigns and has four goals in 11 games for the national team, so he wouldn’t be the worst option.

His market value with Transfermarkt is £40.5m which wouldn’t break the bank, but a striker with 56 goals in 176 games since joining Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 may not be prolific enough for City.

The Telegraph say Newcastle lead the chase for Calvert-Lewin’s signature, so his future might be on Tyneside.
