Report: Man City player ‘to decide’ whether to sign new deal or join ‘backroom team’

Fernandinho is out of contract this summer and has a difficult decision to make on his Manchester City future and playing career. The Sun say the 35-year-old has ‘to decide’ whether to sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium or join Pep Guardiola’s ‘backroom team’ when his contract expires this summer.

Fernandinho joined City from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 and has gone on to make 340 appearances in all competitions, scoring 24 goals and supplying 28 assists (Transfermarkt).

The Brazilian international has been a fantastic servant for City and still has a part to play under Guardiola, but he’s no longer commanding a starting place. Fernandinho has racked up only 810 minutes in the Premier League as he’s secondary to Rodri, but he’s still impressed when called upon in midfield.

Guardiola has started Fernandinho eight times in the league and hasn’t been let down – City boast six wins, one draw and one defeat from those games. He’s delivered Man of the Match displays on occasions, so there’s still life in the old legs.

The question is whether Fernandinho wants another season or if he’s ready to hang up his boots. It doesn’t appear City will rush him, so he might want until the campaign is over to confirm.
