Man City identify £25m Fernandinho replacement with more interceptions than Rodrigo

According to the Daily Star, Manchester City are considering bringing Douglas Luiz back to the Etihad Stadium, as Pep Guardiola wants to strengthen his squad to win back the Premier League title.

The 22-year-old was sold to Aston Villa in 2019 and has impressed so much in the Midlands that we may trigger his buyback clause when the winter transfer window opens.

Luis joined Villa for £15m just over a year ago and has gone on to make 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with four assists.

The Brazilian international has racked up eight appearances across the board this season, making four successful dribbles and averaging a tackle (7) or interception (10) every 36 minutes. He’s been dribbled past just one every 103 minutes too, so it’s easy to see why we’re looking to bring him back.

Luis has made more interceptions than Rodrigo (6), so he does have some attributes required to replace Fernandinho. The Daily Star say his buyback clause is worth £25m, so we’ll have to pay £10m more than we made from his sale a year ago.

The Brazilian has been called up to the national team on account of his club form, so it might be a shrewd move to pounce now. We knew he had potential, hence adding the clause to begin with, so Luiz may return in January.
