Report: Man City ‘unlikely’ to sign 23 y/o if 5ft 9in man ‘remains part’ of squad next season

Manchester City have been scouring the transfer market for Fernandinho’s long-term replacement, but Mike McGrath of The Telegraph says they’re unlikely to sign Douglas Luiz.

The 23-year-old was one of many players on their shortlist, having impressed at Aston Villa since leaving City, but he won’t be brought back to the Etihad if Fernandinho ‘remains part’ of Pep Guardiola’s squad next season.

Luiz left the Sky Blues for Villa in 2019 and has gone on to make 73 appearances in all competition, scoring three goals with five assists.

The Brazilian international has created 17 chances, had 22 successful dribbles, won 42 aerial duels, blocked 50 shots/passes/crosses, made 38 clearances, had 39 clearances and made 45 tackles.

Luiz is a brilliant defensive midfielder who turns over possession effectively and would be a good asset for City, but his return depends on Fernandinho. And the fact the 5ft 9in Brazilian is expected to extend his contract at the Etihad suggests Luiz won’t be needed next season.

It’s good news for Villa as the 23-year-old has shone in the Midlands.
