Mark Hughes – a former professional football player and a very good one for that matter, played for clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and of course his native Wales.
Getting in the first team to accomplish honours for clubs similar to those mentioned above is no easy task, and I for one have the most respect for what the Welshman achieved!
I hear a lot of talk from people, and for that matter, the press, about what they think is best Mark, and that he is a ‘dead man walking’.
It’s easy to blame the manager when things are not going to plan, but would you really want to play ‘snakes & ladders’ with the management?
Isn’t this what we have being doing for the last 30 years, and as everyone knows, not winning any honours, while our rivals, Man United have stuck with their manager for over 20 years and look at them. They win virtually everything.
Well, I believe in Mark Hughes – yes, he might have made a few mistakes, but all managers do. The most important thing is that he learns from his mistakes, moves forward and makes sure it doesn’t happen again.
People may question his attitude when it comes to certain players, but he doesn’t suffer fools gladly – and that’s the way it should be.
One cannot allow players to roam around as if they own the place, and then dictate what they want. Personality wise Mark Hughes is a very genuine and decent chap and I’ve even been fortunate enough to meet both Mark and Chief Executive, Garry Cook.
I really think it’s unfair the amount of criticism City supporters give Mark Hughes, especially when he’s trying to do his best.
Some people make criticism about his facial expressions and body language during and post match, however, at the end of the day he has a very hard job to do. Being a manager is a very stressful career – things go wrong – you get the stick, you have to have a strong mentality!
In addition, Hughsey is a very passionate man (having brought his mentality over from his football days), and who can blame him for showing emotion. It’s better than having someone like our previous boss, Sven Gordon Ericsson, when nine times out of ten he showed no emotion what so ever. He always appeared to be smiling and planning where his next pay packet would be – will it be Europe or Mexico?
Sure, we have expected more from having new owners, staff management changes and money to spend, but we do have enough talent in our squad to survive relegation and I believe we will stay up this season. I also hold the honest belief that we could win the UEFA Cup. Now wouldn’t that be something?
In my opinion, the players just need to keep their heads down, forget about the amount of money your team mates earn, ignore the press and work for each other. Be more confident, take risks, but most importantly, they should believe in their own ability.
Given time we will become a huge force, but we must be patient. As the saying goes, things come to them who wait. Keep the faith my fellow City supporters; believe in Mark Hughes and in the future.
