After making just 15 appearances across the board in eight years, Manchester City sold Angelino to RB Leipzig following a successful loan spell in 2020/21. The 25-year-old shone in his first season as a permanent signing (2021/22), scoring two goals with 13 assists from 42 games, but Pep Guardiola must regret letting him go as he’s in the market for a left-back this summer.
Angelino played in 28 of 34 Bundesliga games for Leipzig and 14 of their 18 domestic cup and European outings, so he’s a fully-fledged regular at the Red Bull Arena. The uncapped Spaniard had 14/19 successful dribbles, created 53 chances and whipped in 187 crosses in the league, so his attacking threat is there for all to see.
Angelino is competent defensively too, averaging a tackle (28) or interception (29) every 40 minutes, giving away one foul every 153 minutes, blocking 33 shots/passes/crosses and making 31 clearances. He’s been dribbled past only once every 135 minutes, so Guardiola could do with a man like him.
Benjamin Mendy was suspended in August after allegations of sex crimes and isn’t likely to feature for City again. Oleksandr Zinchenko didn’t regularly start in his stead, however, so he won’t be first-choice next season either. City want to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, but Angelino could have been the ideal international solution if he was kept for another year.
