Most shots, most dribbles, most interceptions – Man City forward was effective v PSG

|

Manchester City lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday’s Champions League clash, but Riyad Mahrez wasn’t to blame for the result. No player had more shots, more dribbles and more interceptions than the 30-year-old, so he was more than deserving of his 7/10 rating from the Guardian.

Against PSG, Mahrez played for 90 minutes, had 92 touches, completed 92.5% of his 53 passes, created two chances, had seven shots with three hitting the target, whipped in 11 crosses, made four tackles, had three successful dribbles and made three interceptions.

The Algerian international couldn’t steer his side to victory, but he did everything he could and outperformed his teammates on the night. Mahrez has made nine appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals with two assists.

He’s not been commanding a regular starting place in the Premier League but has played every minute of every game in Europe and is still getting among the goals despite the lack of minutes. Mahrez hasn’t started in the league since mid-August but could get the nod against Liverpool on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling wilted against PSG and hasn’t been prolific at all this season, so does Mahrez have a better chance of playing against Liverpool than the former?
