‘Not just his knee’ – Pep Guardiola gives injury update on Man City’s ‘quality’ 5ft 7in man

Pep Guardiola has given a positive injury update on Sergio Aguero ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Olympique Marseille, revealing the 32-year-old could make the bench.

Aguero has been out of action with a knee injury, forcing him to miss our 5-0 win over Burnley (November 28) and 2-0 win over Fulham (December 5), but he could make his long-awaited return in midweek.

Guardiola said: “We will decide tomorrow. Maybe he will be on the bench. (Wednesday) we will see his reaction to his body, not just his knee. But the important thing is in the last three, four days he was part of the group and the niggles he had in the recent past disappeared.

“He will be back when he can train regularly over weeks and weeks and has minutes, minutes, minutes. We know Sergio well. He is working incredibly hard to come back. That is the most important thing. He needs a little time but we must be patient. We want him back but if the knee responds well he will be back, for sure. His quality no-one doubts.”

Aguero has made only four appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal. He’s amassed just 190 minutes of football across the board, spending much of the campaign sidelined with various injuries. The 5ft 8in Argentine international last featured in the Premier League back in October and his last Champions League outing was in mid-November.

Gabriel Jesus should lead the line against Marseille, but Aguero making the bench would be fantastic news. His deal at the Etihad Stadium is up next summer, so this could be his final season at the club. It’s not been an ideal campaign to mark Aguero’s 9/10 years in Manchester, so here’s hoping he can be injury-free for the remaining months.

As for City’s upcoming fixture, Marseille sit rock bottom of Group C with three points from a possible 15. They’ve lost four times and conceded 10 goals, so Guardiola’s men should fancy their chances.
