Manchester City are looking to strengthen at left-back this summer and have their sights set on Nuno Mendes. The 18-year-old is highly rated and recently won the Primeira Liga title with Sporting, so he’s hot property.

The Mirror say Manchester United are also keen on Mendes, but the ‘likely destination’ is City. Agent Miguel Pinto has been in the UK stoking interest in his client, but Mendes won’t come cheap with a £60.25m release clause.

The Portuguese international has made 44 appearances in all competitions since rising through the youth ranks to the first-team in 2020, scoring one goal with two assists.

He’s made 29 league appearances for Sporting this season, creating 31 chances, making 44 successful dribbles, blocking 33 shots/passes/crosses, making 32 clearances, being fouled 59 times, whipping in 135 crosses and averaging a tackle (48) or interception (60) every 22 minutes.

Mendes looks to have a bright future which may be bad news for Oleksandr Zinchenko. The 24-year-old edged out Benjamin Mendy at left-back this season and has three more years on his contract at City, but Mendes’ arrival might put pressure on his place.

Time will tell.
