Pellegrini On Season Opener

Manager Manuel Pellegrini was giving his pre match press conference earlier today and confirmed that he hadn’t yet made his mind up on the team that will kick off our defence of the League Title this season against Newcastle.

The gaffer confirmed that he still doesn’t yet have a fully fit squad following the extended breaks given to those on World Cup duty and he told the Official Site that whatever team he picks, he believes will give us the start we want in the Premier League.

‘We will see tomorrow but not all of them will be available for Sunday. Most of them will, but maybe some players need some more days to be 100% but the whole squad is ready to start. I am not too happy with our preparations because I think we need more days for the players that arrived late. Though it was important for the players to have a good rest after the World Cup.’

The gaffer was obviously asked about whether Sergio Aguero or new signing Eliaquim Mangala would feature on the opening day, and for Aguero he explained that it’s important we take our time with him so he gets fit and gets up to first team levels again first but he is unsure on whether he will play a part in this game.

Mangala on the other hand is likely out of contention because Pellegrini admits he needs longer working with the team first, so he’s unlikely to play.

‘The first game is always the most difficult because it is the next one. I expect my time to play well, it’s a tough game and it’s not easy to play in St James’ Park but we will do our best and we hope to win three points.’
