Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he believes City are in a better place now compared to 12 months ago and he’s very happy with the quality and the options our squad now affords him.

With defender Eliaquim Mangala being the latest through the door this week, the manager has hinted that he might not dip back into the transfer market now before it closes in September, but he is looking to trim the overall size of the squad somewhat.

Speaking to Sky he explained.

‘I am happy with the squad because I think we have a stronger squad this year than last year. I think that Willy Caballero, Sagna, Mangala, Fernando and Frank Lampard are five players that gives us a very important thing in defending and I hope that in attacking we will be the same as last year because we have four important strikers and very good midfielders.’

One of the reasons for this increased strength is just having had 12 months with the group, working with them on the training pitch and the gaffer knowing far more about them now than he did before, and in return the players knowing far more about what he wants and demands from them.

With the world Cup and later holidays impacting on pre season, Pellegrini does have a short term selection headache ahead of the opening game of the season because around 14 players haven’t had a full pre season warm up and he needs to make the decision on whether they are fit and sharp enough to begin or whether they need that extra week, so the line up for the opening day could be another interesting one if players are still to return to contention properly.

In terms of trimming the squad, Javi Garcia is likely to be the first of five moving on.

Garcia is heavily linked with a £13million move to Zenit St Petersburg and although some are reporting that it’s already a done deal, apparently that’s not the case.

The other names in the frame for departures are Matija Nastasic, Micah ‘the leg’ Richards, Scott Sinclair and Karim Rekik.
