Pep Guardiola ends speculation over Man City future with Wednesday announcement

|

Pep Guardiola had an uncertain future at Manchester City as his contract was up at the end of the season and there didn’t appear to be a new deal on the horizon, but the 51-year-old has ended speculation by announcing he’s extended his contract until 2025.

City confirmed Guardiola’s new deal on Wednesday morning and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was full of praise for the Spanish coach. He said: “I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City Football Club will continue.”

The new deal will take Guardiola’s stay in Manchester to nine years, having taken charge from Manuel Pellegrini in 2016 while going on to manage 374 games with 276 wins (73.7%). He’s won four Premier League titles, four League Cups and one FA Cup in his seven years at the Etihad.

City have won four of the last five league crowns and are currently second in the league table after 14 games, so they’ll hope to pip Arsenal by May. The Sky Blues will also hope to finally win a European crown after losing in the 2021 final while being knocked out in the semis of the 2022 tournament.

And although City turned a profit in the transfer market this summer, Guardiola has been backed financially. The defending champions have spent over £100m in each of the last four seasons and broke their transfer record with the signing of Jack Grealish.

There’s no reason for Pep to want to leave.
