Pep Guardiola has decision to make in key position ahead of Wolves clash [Opinion]

|

Manchester City have a difficult trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon and Pep Guardiola has a difficult decision to make in defence. Kyle Walker is likely to miss the game at Molineux through injury, so the City manager must decide on who to name at right-back.

John Stones operated in the makeshift role in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, but Wolves are likely to line up with Pedro Neto on the left wing and he’s created 12 chances while having nine successful dribbles this season, so Guardiola will need a solid option to keep him quiet.

Joao Cancelo could switch flanks to start at right-back, but that would leave a void to fill on the left. Sergio Gomez is the only natural option in the first-team but was benched against Dortmund, so he might not be in his manager’s estimates.

Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte can play at left-back, but the latter is still injured while the former might be needed at centre-back. Wolves are unbeaten at home in the league, conceding just one goal from three games at Molineux, so they’re no slouches. Guardiola shouldn’t underestimate them by rotating his squad too much.
