Pep Guardiola has decision to make in key position for Liverpool v Man City [Opinion]

|

Pep Guardiola rested Erling Haaland in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen so he’ll be fully fit to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The 22-year-old should lead the line over Julian Alvarez.

Guardiola also rested Phil Foden in midweek, so he should also get the nod out wide when Manchester City travel to Anfield. But Guardiola has a decision to make on who to start on the opposite flank.

Where will Manchester City finish in the Premier League this season?

Jack Grealish is in better form of late and was also rested against Copenhagen, so it would suggest Guardiola is planning to start him against the Reds. But the 27-year-old hasn’t made an assist in his last 13 appearances in all competitions, he needs to improve his numbers.

Riyad Mahrez is another option, though he’s been poor this campaign. The 31-year-old scored 24 goals with nine assists from 47 games in 2021/22 but has only scored two goals with one assist from 13 games this season. Mahrez has underwhelmed in his last two appearances too, so he might not get the nod.

Bernardo Silva is the most trustworthy option as he’s scored two goals with four assists from nine Premier League games this season and has been outstanding on the pitch, but he doesn’t often occupy a wide role.

If the 28-year-old has to move away from the midfield, Ilkay Gundogan would need to replace him in the middle of the park – something Guardiola might be reticent to do voluntarily due to Silva’s superior industry.

So time will tell who gets the nod on Sunday.

With Salah possibly returning to form we need as right footed full back to stop his coming inside movement, so Cancello at left back please.
