Pep Guardiola names Man City signing in Premier League squad ahead of Tottenham clash

|

Joao Cancelo leaving to join Bayern Munich on loan left a void to fill in Manchester City’s Premier League squad and Pep Guardiola has named Maximo Perrone in his place. The 20-year-old was signed on a five-year deal from CA Velez Sarsfield in January and is highly rated.

Perrone is a defensive-midfielder who made 33 appearances in all competitions for his former club, scoring three goals with two assists. He’s represented Argentina at U20 level and only turned 20 a matter of weeks ago, so the future looks bright.

Guardiola is likely to start Rodri ahead of Perrone and Kalvin Phillips against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, but the Argentine might get opportunities this season if he’s been retained by Pep.

City loaned Julian Alvarez back out to River Plate upon signing him in January 2022, but they opted against it with Perrone. Pep must have felt his development was best served in Manchester, so it would be surprising if fans didn’t see him play in the coming weeks and months.

Guardiola hasn’t given his youngsters as much playing time as he did last season, but Perrone appears to have been signed to make more of an impact than playing in the reserves and sitting on the bench.

In other news, could Pep Guardiola consider Carlos Borges with Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva struggling?
