Pep Guardiola won’t be happy with Man City man after poor performance [Opinion]

Manchester City came from behind to pick up all three points against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, but the 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium wasn’t down to Riyad Mahrez’s performance as he was substituted immediately after the Sky Blues conceded.

The 31-year-old is without a goal or assist from eight games this season and was fortunate to start against Dortmund, but he didn’t vindicate the decision and Pep Guardiola course-corrected before the hour mark by swapping him for Julian Alvarez.

Mahrez was given a player rating of 5.26 on BBC Sport’s post-match report, which was the second worst ranking of all the City players. Only Jack Grealish scored lower on the night.

Toby Cudworth of 90min gave the Algerian international a player rating of 4/10 and called his performance ‘one-dimensional’ and ‘slow’, so it’s little wonder he was hooked after the break.

Against Dortmund, Mahrez failed to register a shot, failed to create a chance and failed to whip in an accurate cross. He had the second-lowest pass completion (72.7%) and had the second most unsupported touches in the squad (2).

City lock horns with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, but it remains to be seen if Mahrez will start.
