Manchester City won the EFL Cup for the third consecutive season, beating Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday. Phil Foden was outstanding for the Sky Blues, assisting City’s opening goal and being a constant threat throughout the weekend encounter, leading to praise from supporters on social media.
For City’s first goal, Foden glanced a header to Sergio Aguero who finished on the volley from close-range after Rodrigo brilliantly picked out the 19-year-old’s run in behind Matty Targett.
Foden had multiple chances to score on at Wembley, set up opportunities for his teammates, frequently ran at his opponents, seldom relinquished possession and was brilliant at turning over the ball.
He's one of our own. A well deserved man of the match award. Delighted to see Foden get a start today and play so well #MCFC https://t.co/hdjisv59lM

Just been reminded that Foden’s only 19. First time I saw him live yesterday. Some player he’s going to be as he develops alongside the rest of that #mcfc squad.

100% agree, that he doesn't play enough is irrelevant – he is more talented than Mount, Hudson Odi, Maddison or Grealish – non of whom would get into City's side on a regular basis. Phil Foden offers something very different and is a special talent #MCFC

Foden was class yesterday. He is ready to fill David Silva's shoes when he goes at the end of the season #mcfc

Against Villa, Foden played for 90 minutes, made 70 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 90.2% of his 51 passes, created two chances, had five shots, whipped in two crosses, made two tackles, had three successful dribbles, made one interception and made one clearance.
The England u21 international was named man of the match for his performance in the EFL Cup final and could start in City’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Sheffield Wednesday on March 4.
