Report: Club ‘monitoring situation’ of Man City player whose ‘contract expires’ next year

|

Riyad Mahrez has outstanding for Manchester City in 2021/22 but may have an uncertain future if David Anderson of the Mirror is to be believed. The 30-year-old, who has scored more goals than any other City player this season, is out of contract in 2023 and wants a two-extension on his existing deal.

City are unsure whether to sanction a deal until 2025 as Mahrez will be 34 by the time the ‘contract expires’. The Algerian international is certainly deserving of a new deal based on his form, scoring 16 goals with six assists in 27 games across the board, but he’s in the twilight of his career.

Anderson says Paris Saint-Germain are ‘monitoring the situation’ and could capitalise if his future at the Etihad remains up in the air. Mahrez has scored 55 goals with 43 assists in 169 games for City since his 2018 move, so PSG would be signing a talented forward.

The fact City are expected to sign a striker this summer also complicates matters, as Pep Guardiola won’t need Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish to operate in a makeshift role anymore. Guardiola won’t want to lose Mahrez if he can help it, however, so City will need to table a good offer.
