Report: Man City ‘confident’ 27 y/o will sign new contract despite ‘interest’ from La Liga duo

Raheem Sterling is out of contract in 18 months and previously rejected the chance to sign an extension as he was unhappy with a lack of playing time in big games last season.

He dropped his long-term agent Aidy Ward which stalled talks and wasn’t going to commit to a new deal without assurances about his role under Pep Guardiola.

The 27-year-old had interest from Barcelona and was leaning towards a move to La Liga before getting more regular opportunities at City and finding his form again.

Now the Daily Mail say City are ‘confident’ Sterling will sign a new deal despite there still being ‘interest’ from Barca and Real Madrid. Ferran Torres leaving for the former means Guardiola can’t afford to let another attacker depart in Janaury, so it’s vital that Sterling stays.

The England international has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals with three assists. He wasn’t a regular in the first few weeks of the campaign but has started eight of City’s last 10 league outings, scoring six and making one assist.

In all competitions, Sterling has had a hand in 10 goals from his last nine games, so it’s easy to see why City want to tie him down to a new deal.
