Report: Summer transfer activity ‘reduces chances’ of 2018-signing staying at Man City

|

Manchester City wasted little time signing Erling Haaland this summer, but his arrival may not be welcomed by every player in the squad. 90min say Riyad Mahrez, who is out of contract in 2023, could have an uncertain future as Haaland being signed ‘reduces the chances’ of him staying at the Etihad Stadium.

The 31-year-old joined City from Leicester in 2018 and has gone on to make 189 appearances in all competitions, scoring 63 goals with 46 assists. Mahrez has been outstanding this season, scoring 24 goals with nine assists from 47 games across the board, so he’s a player Pep Guardiola would no doubt love to keep.

But the Algerian international can leave on a free transfer next year if City can’t tie him down to a new deal, so they might be getting worried. 90min stated that talks are ongoing about a contract extension, but they will sell Mahrez if he’s unwilling to commit his future beyond next summer.

The 31-year-old set City back £61m four years but has a market value of £36m now while earning £120k-per-week in wages. Mahrez won’t come cheap and is in the twilight of his career, so it remains to be seen if a suitor is willing to put up that money.
