Turkish official, Selçuk Dereli has been designated to referee Manchester City’s UEFA Cup second leg tie against FC Copenhagen.

Selçuk Dereli

Physical education teacher Dereli took charge of the final of the Euro U19 championships in 2003. The 39-year-old Turk is renowned for allowing the game to freely flow and hardly ever brandishes yellow or red cards.

Selcuk Dereli’s career however never really took off. He seems to be stuck officiating UEFA Cup qualifiers and less than glamorous World Cup matches.

Did you know?

Dereli nearly set a world record by allowing 16 minutes stoppage time during a match between Denizlispor & Fenerbahce in 2006. It was the last game of the season, which Fenebahce had to win for the Turkish championship.

The 90 minutes ended in a draw, however speculation was rife when suggestions circulated around Turkey that Dereli adding as much time as possible to give his favourite team, Fenerbahce an unfair opportunity to win. Incidentally they didn’t!
