Rumours surrounding the potential appointment of Sven-Goran Eriksson as Manchester City manager have been widely reported as not being acceptable to the majority of City supporters. In some quarters, the alledged interviews between himself and Frank’s people have been described as smacking of ‘desperation.’
Well, this correspondent is beyond desperate to see City install a new gaffer as soon as possible. We are almost out of time for being able to prepare for any sort of concentrated Premier League campaign and the damage may already have been done by the relentless takeover saga. So yes, this situation is desperate.
The way I see it, if our club has been openly available for sale for as long as it has, and has courted the likes of Thaksin Shinawatra to the extent that it has, then we have to be prepared to accept that there could be a high profile management choice by the new owner.
Furthermore, if Manchester City are to attract top quality signatures this summer then a manager with a high profile will be a pre-requisite. Eriksson has a sound record at club level and when I consider some of the other names that have been linked with us these past weeks, his is one name I would certainly accept.
I have expressed recently my increasing concern over recent developments and what could follow a takeover by Frank Shinawatra. But if it is to go ahead and Eriksson is his choice, then so be it.
We all know just how appalling the football at City was under Pearce and how close we came to relegation under the City board’s high wages and barrel scraping transfer policies.
On top of all the other unwelcome publicity we will continue to attract should Frank takeover, the media will relish City fans joining in with the soap opera by openly going against a manager with a proven top flight record who hasn’t even been appointed yet. That’s opposed to bemoaning the low profile appointment that the absence of outside investment would surely bring from a City board who have let us all down so badly.
If Eriksson is appointed City manager then I hope we could all get behind him. If that happened and the first City league goal crashed into the back of the net at Eastlands for the first time since 1st January……and we went on to win…how would we all feel then?
