‘So influential’, ‘one of the best starlets’ – Pundit hails 22 y/o signing new Man City deal

|

Phil Foden is set to sign a new long-term deal at Manchester City, earning him £200k-per-week until 2027. The 22-year-old is now on the same money Raheem Sterling was taking home before his switch to Chelsea, but Noel Whelan says he’s worth it.

Gabriel Jesus’ contract ran down to its final year, forcing City to cash in early rather than lose him for nothing in 2023. It was a similar situation with Sterling, resulting in him returning to London. But the Premier League champions have moved quickly to ensure they’ve protected a valuable asset in Foden by handing him a large payrise.

Whelan supports the decision as he believes Foden is one of the best playmakers around. He told Football Insider: “You can’t knock any deal for Foden. He’s one of the best starlets we have in England right now.

“He’s so influential on the ball with his work rate and quality in the final third. I don’t think anyone on that side deserves a contract more than Foden. There’s always an end product with him. These younger players are going to be the future for the club.”

Tony Cascarino warned the 22-year-old about putting pen to paper on a long-term deal, as his ages are now locked in until 2027 regardless if what the market does. If Foden realises his potential and is among the best players in Europe when he’s in his prime, he could earn a lot more money than £200k-per-week

The England international was named PFA Young Player of the Year last season, so his stock is sky high right now. Foden scored 14 goals with 11 assists from 45 games across the board in 2021/22, so his output is outstanding.

The future is bright.
