Transfer blow as highly-rated youngster turns down Man City to join Tottenham

|

Manchester City were recently linked with a move for Jude Soonsup-Bell after his Chelsea career appeared to be over, but the 19-year-old has opted against joining the Premier League defending champions, instead signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur.

Soonsup-Bell joined Chelsea from Swindon Town seven years ago and scored 23 goals with two assists from 25 games for their U18s, netted one goal with three assists from 12 games for the U19s and scored five goals with two assists from 40 games for the U21. He made one first-team appearance for Chelsea too but let his contract run down as he wanted a fresh challenge.

The 19-year-old looks to have a bright future for club and country, having scored for England U15s, U16s, U18s and U19s, so City’s loss may be Tottenham’s gain. Liam Delap was meant to be their future prospect in attack, but he struggled on loan at Stoke City and hasn’t yet fired while on loan at Preston North End, so next season might be challenging.

Pep Guardiola hasn’t used City’s youngsters as much as he did last season, so maybe Jude Soonsup-Bell felt his chances of making the step-up to the first-team were better at Spurs. Staying in London was likely a big factor too.
