UEFA Boost For City

Following pressure from the players’ union FIFPro, UEFA have watered down the sanctions applied to Manchester City for our breach of the Financial Fair Play rules.

Having initially been told that for European competition in 2014-15 we would be limited to a squad of 21 players, 8 of whom should be homegrown, it has now been decided that we will only have to provide 5 homegrown players, which gives us far more leeway in terms of the overall squad we have to register.

Last season we named 23 players, but only used 21 of those due to the 8 home grown rule.

UEFA’s general secretary Gianni Infantino told the media following the change of heart.

‘It came after a request from the players union FIFPro saying when you take these kind of sanctions and measures you cannot harm the players and the rights of a player who has a contract the behaviour of the clubs. So we looked at it and it was felt appropriate there for the number to be proportionally reduced as well.’

Of course when the sanctions were announced initially, City opted to not challenge the decision and to instead accept it, saying that our transfer plans for the coming season would be unaffected by the punishment which also included a cap on transfer spending to £49million net, as we move towards full compliance naturally.
