Why did Pep Guardiola leave Phil Foden out of Man City’s clash with Wolves?

|

Manchester City confirmed their starting XI against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon and Phil Foden was a notable absentee. The 22-year-old was left out of the matchday squad to be replaced by Cole Palmer and the line from City suggests he’s ‘not fully fit’.

Foden’s last appearance came in City’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on January 14. The England international was brought off before the hour mark after a less-than-impressive performance and was an unused substitute in City’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Pep Guardiola has been vocal about certain players not displaying the right attitude in training and Foden was believed to be one of them. Foden being left out of the squad due to lack of fitness could be a message that he needs work hard to get back into the team.

The 22-year-old has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals with four assists. Foden has scored just one goal in his last nine Premier League outings and hasn’t bagged in the Champions League since City’s opening group game, so his form has fallen apart.

After Wolves, City lock horns with Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round on January 27, but it remains to be seen if Foden will return.
