Why Man City won’t pay £33.9m and £7.6m-a-year wages to sign Barcelona man [Opinion]

Manchester City have Ederson, Zach Steffan and Scott Carson to call upon in goal, but El Nacional say the Premier League defending champions have their eye on another shot-stopper – Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The 29-year-old reportedly has an uncertain future at Barcelona as his form has wavered. Ter Stegen has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, conceding 15 goals and keeping only three clean sheets.

He’s saved 66.7% of shots on target faced in La Liga and only 58.3% in the Champions League, so Ter Stegen hasn’t been at his best. El Nacional believe City want to capitalise on the situation by bringing him to the Etihad Stadium.

The German international has a €40m (£33.9m) valuation while earning €9m-a-year (£7.6m-a-year) in wages, but it’s hard to see Pep Guardiola pulling out the stops to strengthen a position he’s already filled.

Ederson has been an excellent servant for City and has five clean sheets in nine Premier League games this season, so he’s not in need of replacing. The 28-year-old signed a five-year deal in September too, so it’s clear the Sky Blues aren’t looking to offload him.

It’s hard to see Ter Stegen dethroning Ederson any time soon.
