‘Will be discussed next month’ – Fabrizio Romano gives contract update on Man City player

|

Rico Lewis has started two of Manchester City’s last three games in all competitions and was praised by Pep Guardiola for his impressive form at senior level. Man City also plan to hand the 17-year-old a new deal as reward for successfully making the step-up from the academy, says Fabrizio Romano.

He wrote on Twitter: “Manchester City are working to get Rico Lewis’ new long-term deal done – it will be discussed in the next weeks/months.”

Lewis joined City nine years ago and has risen through the youth ranks to the first-team, making 28 appearances for the U18s (three goals, two assists), six appearances for the U19s (one goal, one assist) and 10 appearances for the U21s (one goal).

The 17-year-old, who can operate as a makeshift holding midfielder, made his debut for the U18s at the age of 15 and was named Player of the Year as captain in his second term for the youth side. Lewis also played for the U21s, but he wasn’t there long after being promoted the following campaign.

Lewis was called up to the first-team for pre-season and stayed in the senior squad after impressing. He’s gone on to make six appearances, scoring one goal, becoming the youngest player to score for City in the Champions League. His current deal is up in 2024, but an extension would likely mean a long-term contract.
