Another Man City player isn’t guaranteed to start v USA despite scoring v Iran [Opinion]

Jack Grealish scored after coming off the bench in England’s 6-2 win over Iran on Monday afternoon and put in a good performance at the Khalifa International Stadium, but it may not be enough to start in the Three Lions’ second World Cup group game.

Gareth Southgate gave Raheem Sterling the nod over Grealish and was vindicated in his decision after the 27-year-old got on the scoresheet and impressed. So Grealish might have to be patient for more opportunities as Southgate won’t voluntarily change a winning team on sentiment.

Vital Man City suggested that Phil Foden would have a similar problem as Buyako Saka shone in his absence, so the Man City duo might be staying on the bench for another game. They’re sure to get playing time but it won’t be from the off unless injury struck.

Grealish will be pleased with his contribution though, as he’d failed to score in his last eight internationals prior to the Iran clash. The 27-year-old has two goals and six assists from 25 games for England and will hope to add to his tally before the tournament is up.
