Report: PL rivals ‘enquiring’ about Man City player, 30 y/o ‘unlikely’ to join club

Riyad Mahrez has been tipped to leave Manchester City this summer and Dean Jones of Eurosport says Arsenal could be a potential destination. The Gunners have been ‘enquiring’ about the 30-year-old, but Jones concedes it’s ‘unlikely’ he’d willingly move to North London.

Mahrez made 48 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 14 goals with nine assists, but he’s was wildly inconsistent in 2020/21 and may need upgrading. The Algerian international scored only four Premier League goals between September 2020 and February 2021 and failed to find the back of the net domestically after March.

Arsenal finished 8th in the league last season with 61 points from 38 games, so it’s hard to see Mahrez leaving the champions for them. He won’t give up his chance to win silverware for a club that won’t be in Europe next season, so Arsenal’s interest may not go anywhere.

That being said, Pep Guardiola may still consider moving him on in the near future. City would be left with Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, so they wouldn’t be short of options in his absence. And if the Sky Blues can bring in Jack Grealish this summer, Guardiola will have more than he needs.
