Bad news for Pep Guardiola as Man City player faces injury layout following surgery

|

Pep Guardiola has been dealt a blow with Kyle Walker undergoing surgery due to injury. Manchester City confirmed on Thursday morning the 31-year-old was forced to go under the knife to fix the problem with his groin.

Walker picked up the injury in City’s 6-3 win over Manchester United, coming off the pitch in the first half and being replaced by Sergio Gomez. He missed City’s 5-0 thrashing of FC Copenhagen and will likely be out for some time now.

Walker has made eight appearances in all competitions this season and was a regular under Guardiola until he picked up a knock in September’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

The England international was an unused substitute in the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and has now missed all three of City’s Champions League group games due to injury, so he hasn’t played a lot of football in recent weeks.

Joao Cancelo is able to replace Walker at right-back, so Sergio Gomez will likely have to come in at left-back until the 32-year-old recovers.

Fullback is the one area City aren’t as strong in. Guardiola is lacking depth as Benjamin Mendy is suspended following allegations of rape and sexual assault. Gomez was brought in to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko, but City didn’t sign a second left-back, so they can’t afford to lose another player.
