Defender won’t leave Man City despite Bayern wanting ‘dream signing’ [Opinion]

Joao Cancelo has been linked with a move away from Manchester City by Sport Bild, with Bayern Munich leading the chase for his signature.

The 27-year-old has been in fantastic form this season, so it’s little surprise he’s attracting interest from Bayern, but the Bundesliga giants might be wasting their time as Pep Guardiola considers Cancelo indispensable.

The Portuguese international joined City from Juventus in 2019 and has gone on to make 107 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals with 14 assists.

Cancelo has made 31 appearances across the board this season, scoring three goals with eight assists. The 27-year-old has been outstanding as a makeshift left-back and is laying claim as one of the best fullbacks in Europe, but Bayern are barking up the wrong tree.

Sport Bild say Julian Nagelsmann wants the ‘dream signing’ at the Allianz Arena, but Cancelo is happy in Manchester and City aren’t looking to sell. The Portuguese defender has five-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at the Etihad, so City aren’t under obligated to cash in.

Bayern will have to turn their attentions elsewhere, unless they’re willing to pay a princely sum of money.
