‘He’s quietly excited’ – Journalist says 26 y/o hopes Man City move ‘might come off’

|

Manchester City could be completing only three pieces of transfer business this summer – signing a left-back to replace Benjamin Mendy, midfielder to replace Fernandinho and attacker to replace Sergio Aguero.

They’ve already brought in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and want Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, so that would leave Pep Guardiola only needing a midfielder.

The City manager has his eye on Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Dean Jones believes the 26-year-old will be receptive to a move from Elland Road despite being publicly happy to stay just weeks ago.

He told Give Me Sport: “I think Phillips is getting quietly excited that this Man City one might come off, and he’s no closer to agreeing a new contract with Leeds.”

With two years remaining on his deal at Leeds, the Whites aren’t obligated to cash in early just yet, but they may be fearful of losing Phillips now. Leeds finished just one place and three points above the relegation zone this season while City won the title, so there’s obviously a more attractive destination.

Guardiola is a big fan of Phillips too, so the English international will feel his career can reach new heights as he should get opportunities. Rodri is first-choice in midfield and won’t surrender his place easily, but there’s must be a plan for Phillips to get games as the stories won’t stop.
