Manchester City thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 on Sunday afternoon and Joao Cancelo was one of many players who impressed at St James’ Park. The 27-year-old scored a brilliant goal and made a great assist to help put Newcastle to the sword.
Cancelo’s having a great season as a makeshift left-back and is staking a claim to be one of the best fullbacks in Europe. No player had more shots on target or won more freekicks on the day, so it wasn’t a surprise that he was lauded by fans on social media.
Cancelo is immense.

joao cancelo might just be my favourite footballer of all time. i’ve loved a lot of footballers like sergio, david and el shaarawy but there’s something about joao. i think he just has everything i love in a footballer; pace, versatility, teks, immense range of passing…

Nothing to see here. Just a normal play from a right-back. Cancelo is WORLD CLASS! And btw, who’s this Trent guy people talk about? https://t.co/geD9akdOPo

João Cancelo is the best right back in the league and he usually plays left back 🤣

Against Newcastle, Cancelo played for 90 minutes, had 87 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 90% of his 70 passes, created one chance, had three shots with 66.66% hitting the target, whipped in three crosses with 33.33% finding a teammate, made two tackles, had one clearance, gave away one foul, made one successful dribble and won one freekick.
The Portuguese international has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals with seven assists. He’s a natural right-back who is flourishing on the left and looks a smart piece of business from 2019. The sky is the limit for Cancelo.
