‘Incredible footballer’ – Media rave over ‘excellent’ Man City player after Brentford win

|

Manchester City enjoyed a 2-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday evening and Joao Cancelo was one of many players who impressed. The 27-year-old didn’t have a hand in either goal, but he shone at left-back and was a constant attacking threat.

No player had more touches, made more tackles, registered more shots on target, made more interceptions or made more successful dribbles than Cancelo, so it wasn’t a surprise that he was named Man of the Match while making WhoScored’s Team of the Week. Media figures on social media lavished the Portuguese international in praise.

Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News gave Cancelo a player rating of 8/10 and said the left-back was ‘fabolous’ and ‘excellent’ against Brentford. Jamie Spencer of 90min said Cancelo was City’s ‘best attacker’. Mike Minay of BBC Sport said the 27-year-old ‘ran the show’, City Xtra called him ‘incredible’ and Sam Lee of The Athletic was in awe.

Cancelo played for 90 minutes, had 118 touches, completed 79.7% of his 74 passes, had two shots on target, whipped in four crosses, made four tackles, had one clearance, made three interceptions, gave away one foul, made four successful dribbles and was fouled twice.
