Man City eye “powerful” £52k-p/w starlet who Guardiola lavished with praise – Report

|

According to a report from the Telegraph, Man City are prepared to join the race to sign Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell this summer as Pep Guardiola plots to strengthen the left-back area – but the Sky Blues may face competition for his signature as well as a lofty price tag.

Chilwell, who has started 23 games for the Foxes this season under Brendan Rodgers, becoming a key player as they chase second-spot just behind City, is now reportedly at the centre of our interest as we contemplate a more successful title challenge next season.

Who would you prefer at left-back?

Oleksandr Zinchenko

Benjamin Mendy

Angelino

Ben Chilwell

The Englishman, who has made more interceptions than all of our current left-backs over 2019/2020 according to WhoScored, could be the ideal candidate to succeed Benjamin Mendy whilst allowing Oleksandr Zinchenko to take up his natural position in midfield.

Mendy, who has featured the most in this position, is also susceptible to injury problems – having missed a combined 85 games since signing at the Etihad back in the summer of 2017.

This has potentially prompted Guardiola to consider Chilwell as a signing who can strengthen the left-back area, with the Spaniard even lavishing him with praise in the past according to quotes from the Daily Mirror.

Indeed, while Chilwell currently commands a salary of £52,000-per-week as per spotrac, his apparent price tag is far more eye-watering as the Telegraph claim he won’t be go for less than £85 million.

However, with teammate Jonny Evans describing him as ‘fantastic’, ‘powerful’ and insisting he has ‘everything’ to be England’s number one left-back for years to come – it could be a fee well worth paying, especially considering he is still only 23-years-old.
