Vital Man City was critical over the contributions of Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish at the Etihad Stadium, but Ilkay Gundogan didn’t have the best game either. The 32-year-old was neither creative or combative, so he might have to make way.

Bernardo Silva is a shoo-in to make the starting eleven if Mahrez is dropped, but Guardiola could use the 28-year-old as a central midfielder instead, leaving a void on the wing to be filled. That’s where Julian Alvarez comes in.

The 22-year-old has had a bright start to life at City, scoring three goals from seven appearances, so he might be in line to start. Guardiola won’t trust any other midfielder than Silva to replace Gundogan, so he’ll need a different player on the wing.

Phil Foden could be replacing Jack Grealish on the other flank, so Alvarez is the only viable option.
